AI Visibility Weekly: AI Traffic Converts 5x Better, But Most B2B Brands Can't See It
This week we published a data piece on AI search traffic conversion rates. Five independent studies, the honest caveats, and the pipeline math for B2B SaaS.
The short version: visitors from ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity convert at 14.2% versus 2.8% for Google organic. For SaaS and tech specifically, one study found an 18.7% conversion rate from AI referrals, an 8.5x multiplier. But the premium only applies if AI engines are recommending you in the first place. And 96% of B2B companies are not in the answer on discovery queries. Read the full breakdown here.
Three stories worth watching this week.
82% of B2B software buyers have sourced a recommendation from an AI chatbot.
G2 published their 2026 Buyer Behavior Report on July 22. The headline: AI chatbots are now neck-and-neck with review sites as the top influence on vendor shortlists. Review sites edge out chatbots 38% to 37% as the single greatest influence on shortlist formation. That margin has been swapping positions since April.
The number that matters: 50% of buyers said AI chatbots had the greatest impact during the evaluation stage, not just initial discovery. The shortlist is not the only thing being shaped by AI. The comparison is too. And 69% chose a different vendor than they initially planned based on AI chatbot guidance.
Google shipped Gemini 3.6 Flash and expanded AI Mode to France.
Gemini 3.6 Flash became generally available on July 21, replacing 3.5 Flash as the default model across the Gemini app and API. The new model cross-checks more sources before answering. Brands with clear, consistent evidence across third-party sources appear more often. Brands with thin or contradictory information get filtered out.
AI Mode now has over 1 billion monthly active users. On July 16, Google launched “Connected Apps” in AI Mode, letting users take action directly from AI search results. On July 22, Google expanded AI Mode to France with publisher opt-out and neighboring-rights compensation terms that could set the template for global rollout. The AI answer is becoming the destination, not the starting point.
ChatGPT’s share of AI chatbot traffic dropped from 87% to 57%. Gemini is the reason.
ChatGPT still has 900 million weekly active users. But its share of AI chatbot web traffic fell from 87% to 56.7% year-over-year. Gemini surged from 6% to 25.5%, the largest share gain by any chatbot, driven by Android and Gmail integration. Anthropic’s crawl footprint now accounts for roughly 23% of AI crawler traffic, nearly double OpenAI’s share.
The takeaway: optimizing for ChatGPT alone is no longer sufficient. Your buyers are splitting across platforms. Your AI visibility strategy needs to cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. One platform, one check, one score does not cut it anymore.
Until next time, Dustin
P.S. Check your GA4 referral sources this week. Look for traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, and gemini.google.com. If those domains do not appear in your referral report, they may be grouped under “direct” or “(other).” You could be getting AI traffic and not know it. Or you could be getting none. Either answer changes what you do next.
